Carolyn Shannon

I am a professional genealogist in the Chicago area specializing in Midwestern United States research.
Let me bring my training in historical research and more than a decade of experience in technical writing and training to your project. I know how to dig deep into archives, evaluate sources critically, and translate complex findings into clear, meaningful narratives.
Background
My love of family history started young, accompanying my mother on research trips to the Newberry Library and local history centers. Those early experiences taught me genealogy isn’t just about names and dates—it’s about understanding people in their unique places and circumstances.
I studied the History of Christianity at the University of Chicago Divinity School, and was previously a certified project manager and technical trainer in the local government and technology sectors. I am a member of the Kane County Genealogy Society, Association of Professional Genealogists, National Genealogy Society, and Georgia Genealogy Society.
My research experience includes Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and 19th century Germany, Italy, and Latvia, with special focus on immigration and 19th century ethnic communities in Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Missouri, and Illinois.
I have completed the following genealogical study programs: Institute of Genealogical and Historical Research (IGHR): Advanced Methods, Intermediate Genealogy and Historical Studies; National Genealogy Society (NGS): Level 2 Prompt Engineering and Specialized AI Tools; German Genealogical Translations.
My Approach
I specialize in bringing local history and personal journeys together.
By focusing on context—what was happening in your ancestor’s town, what challenges they faced, who their neighbors were—I uncover connections and stories that often break through brick walls. I work closely with clients to understand their questions, develop targeted research plans, and can provide coaching on genealogical tools and processes.
I’m also a speaker, having presented at national technical conferences and as a house history docent. I love helping others discover the stories hidden in records and landscapes.
For me, genealogy and local history are connections to our fuller selves—parts of our story set in motion long before we were born. They’re expressions of love, ways of honoring those who struggled and sacrificed before us.
